Cowboy Dressage Gatherings are more like “family gatherings” than competitions. People come together to cheer each other on and there is always someone there to help out when needed.
We do provide awards as a way of rewarding hard work, however one of the most common things I hear is that people are there to better their scores and it is not about the awards. Teaching our youth this philosophy proves to be very beneficial in their partnership with their horses.
“What I always say is that I love horses for Delaney because it teaches her every lesson I want her to carry over into her adulthood. Life’s hard, we have bad days, but we have to give each “ride” our best shot. And we have to offer empathy and encouragement to our fellow riders and our horse when they have a bad day. I love that it teacher her to control her attitude and mindset.”
It teaches her accountability to another being, she learns teamwork, and is learning to set goals and work for a long time to achieve them.
Also…its just fun! The girls have so much fun together and that makes it all worth it for me. - Amy Weiseler
“What has been beneficial to me was being able to work with and help other youth members.” – Haylie Tomlinson
“ The overall atmosphere is much more inviting in the CD community when compared to other disciplines. Everyone is willing to help each other and it keeps the overall stress levels lower. The atmosphere and competition seem to be more based on horsemanship skills rather than the caliber and talent of the horse.” - Kira Tomlinson
“ I think CD has helped my daughter begin to overcome the fear of performing in front of people and some of her social anxiety. She feels it has helped her be more confident. I think it is good for kids because they are able to work to improve from wherever they are in their horse riding abilities. I also feel it teaches kids to be aware of many different aspects of horsemanship.” Jaycie McNamee
“ I think what has been beneficial for Harley has been the kind words of encouragement and compliments from nearly every participant. Participants/judges/auditors really go out of their way to seek the kids out to simply ask about their horse or offer to help. Watching their eyes light up when talking about their horse is pretty priceless. When people clap and cheer after a test makes anyone feel like a rock star. I love how this is encouraged.” Erin Anderson
